In the 17th century, the nomadic was offered land by the colonists to cultivate in Viger, in the Lower St. Lawrence region. Preferring their freedom, they dispersed throughout Quebec. Not until 1987, after extensive research, did 130 Maliseets finally reunite to form a band council for their nation.

Referred to as “Indians” and then “American Indians” a little later on, today they are more accurately referred to as the “First Nations” for the indigenous or aboriginal peoples of Canada, “Inuit” for the Aboriginal people of Northern Canada and “Métis" for the people of mixed ancestry.
